	Warning: When saving a document do not open a new document before the document saved message appears. To do so can corrupt the codes in the database by copying the codes from the old document to the new.
	C-I-SAID will not save documents with the comma set as a decimal separator if the documents contain segments as sub sections of speech units (e.g.1.01). Apart from saving these documents you can use C-I-SAID with the the comma set as a decimal separator.

Why do I get an error message "11 Division by Zero" when I first start playing a linked file in synchronised mode.

This error occurs if the first link is 0:0:0 and you start playing by pressing the Play Current Text Segment Button.

To avoid start by pressing the play from current position button or set the link to 0:0:001. This problem is fixed in build 3.5.8

Error Messages and problems when indexing documents.

A problem can occur when a new document is first indexed, if the speaker designator is the same as a mathematical function used by the operating system.

3075 Syntax error (missing operator) in query expression '(( WordCountList.DATE Is Null AND WordCountList.GROUP Is Null AND WordCountList.MOD Is Null AND WordCountList.MOD2 Is Null AND WordCountList.RES Is Null ))'. errtotalwordcounttext

The example above is caused by the speaker designator MOD which is also a reserved mathematical function. The reserved functions are too numerous to list but they are all three letters. This error has only been reported once.

The use of a % sign in the text of a document can cause the indexing system to freeze because this sign is also a speaker designator.

You can use the batch replace functions to change speakers or symbols throughout a coding frame.

Can I import Data from Spreadsheet programmes such as SPSS into C-I-SAID

Data in tab delimited file format can be edited in the Data Editor and input directly from the Rating Scale Manager into C-I-SAID. C-I-SAID will add the necessary documents, codes and scales. To do this a number of scales have to be first added. Build 3.5.9 automated most of these processes. A full description and tutorial is found in the document Importing Data from a Spreadsheet.

Best Practice When Using MP3 and WMA Compressed Audio Files.

MP3, WMA and some special WAV file formats have the distinct advantage of being smaller and more portable than the normal Wav files. However, in C-I-SAID they have the disadvantage that they reduce the availability of special functions such as the ability to control playback speed, access to the acoustic manager and the linking editor and the availability of measures such as volume and pitch of the spoken word. You can get the best of both worlds by using the WAV file when transcribing and linking and then replacing it with the compressed version.

To access all features of C-I-SAID.

	Create an acoustic database for the wav file.
	Link the wav file to the document.
	Transcribe and link the document – the linking editor will be available as this uses the acoustic database.
	Go to the report manager and in scale management select add acoustic properties and add the properties you require.
	Now open the document in the document manager and change the wav file for the compressed version – retaining the linking information.
	Save the wav file in a safe place.

Provided you do not change the document structure the stored information will be valid.

I have Created a Linked document and now I want to output it as an interactive web page. How do I do this.

You can output a document as a web page from the Report Manager Text Editing Window. If you want the interactive features you must first generate the document as a report. This can be done either through the Categorical Scale Search feature - using "output all" or as below which uses the "View Text" feature.

	Open the Report Manager
	Open the C-I-SAID Database
	Select Document \ View a Document Text
	Select the document you want to save as a web page - it will display as a report in the report window. - this is the report output window that a search would also access.
	Select Output \ Copy to Text Editor - the document appears in the text editor window

You can now edit the text.

Select file \ Save External Document AS

Select HTML

Select DHTML, select the audio file type. Don't select make new wav.

This will create a web page which is interactive. The web page and the media file must be in the same folder. To hear the sound click on the linked paragraph. To stop double click.

I am getting error messages such as "94 invalid use of Null Error err OpenLastSet" when try to open a coding window.

Some earlier C-I-SAID databases are not compatible with the current version of C-I-SAID and need to be converted.

First update your version of C-I-Said to build 3.6.0, March 2003 (see Build History).

If there is still a problem - particularly if this is an old database. Then

Open the Document Manager.

Select File \ Convert Older Database to C-I-SAID.

Select the database to convert.

Enter a file name

Enter the number of scales in the new database

This method can be used to convert all earlier databases - its also the fastest way to increase the number of scales in a database.

Acoustic files made in some earlier versions of C-I-SAID are not compatible with the current version and need to be remade. To stop the error messages use

Open the C-I-SAID database.

Select Acoustics \ Make Acoustic File Database

Elect to overwrite the existing file.

To use acoustic files with the new version follow the instructions in the help documentation.

Why do I have to enter the registration number whenever I start the programme?

Some purchasers from Scolari in the US have been issued with the wrong registration number which has to to be entered every time they start a new session. If your system has this fault please contact the US office who will supply you with the correct number.

When I try to save a text document into C-I-SAID I get an error message - such as "object not set".

The most likely cause of this error is that you have saved a C-I-SAID document as text. This document would have the header information (specifically the segment numbers in place). When you try to save it again within a C-I-SAID database the programme assumes it is part of an existing database and this causes the error.

There are two ways to transfer documents from one database to another.

1. Use the function Documents\Import Document in the Document Manager to import a document from one database to another.

2. Use the Documents\Display Text \ Display Plain Text function in the Report Manager which prints a version of the document without the header information but with the speakers. Save as txt or rtf. This document will load directly into a C-I-SAID without problems.

Why, when I try printing from C-I-SAID is the formatting not correct?

If you are using Windows 2000 then the printer set up window will not change the default properties of the printer. This is due to a fault in Windows 2000. The only solution is to change the printer properties from the printers panel in the control panel.

Please note that the default margin settings for printing lead to a very narrow page and should be reset before printing. These changes are carried over into the print. These setting will be changed in a future upgrade.
