In the resources section of the site I shall be gradually adding items related to psychotherapy and alcohol counselling  which I have written over the years.  They are here because I get asked for copies.  Its likely that the items will appear as requests are made.

I am retaining the copyright on all the items but you may use them as you please provided you acknowledge their source.   It the items appear in the left column there is further information including copies in MS Word 6 format which can be downloaded.

Resistance to Intimacy: An Experiential Method for the Illustration of Group Dynamics. This paper was written about 1979 to clarify the methodology that I was using when running residential training groups for counsellors and therapists.  It was never meant to be an academic paper but it does represent a teaching method which can illustrate group processes without being too intrusive. It also provides a good common sense way of understanding how defence mechanisms work.

Key Concepts in the Training Of Alcohol Psychotherapists.

This is an unpublished book chapter which reviews the work on the relationship between role security and therapeutic commitment.  The AAPPQ was originally developed to test these theories. The chapter is one of three summaries written at the time of my retirement from clinical and teaching practice.  The others will eventually be posted.  The appendix to this paper contains copies of the individual AAPPQ, the PETQ and the RRQ described below.

Alcohol and Alcohol Problems Perception Questionnaire. (AAPPQ)

The AAPPQ: This zip file contains the three section of the original AAPPQ.  The AAPPQ was developed to test hypotheses which originated from in depth studies of professional and their clients. The AAPPQ  provides scales to measure therapeutic commitment, role security, role support and knowledge of alcohol and alcohol problems and has been widely used in studies of the effectiveness of training.  It is easily modifiable for other groups of workers.

This is version 4 which dates from 1979 and is the version most commonly used. They are in MS Word 6 format.

AAPPQ(I)

The AAPPQ was developed to measure general attitudes to a client group the individualised version (AAPPQ(I) was developed to measure attitudes to a specific client.  It has been shown to be correlated with the therapists assessment of the clients motivation, the clients experience of the therapist and the clients adopting a recommended treatment plan.  (See Cartwright, Hyams and Spratley in references and  Key Concepts Paper )

Patients Experience of Therapy Questionnaire. (PETQ)

These items were extracted from a study of patient satisfaction and were associated with patient engagement in treatment and therapist attitudes.  I also employed them over several years in a general audit of the work of psychoanalytic psychotherapists where they were seen to be associated with completion of recommended treatment, satisfaction with treatment and self rated improvement.  Its unlikely that I will ever write up the final studies but there is references to them in Hyams, Cartwright and Spratley, Cartwright, Hyams and Spratley in references and  Key Concepts Paper.

Role Relationship Questionnaire. (RRQ)

This was designed to help therapists formulate the nature of their relationships with their patients.  Its based upon the application of role theory to the therapeutic relationship and asks the therapist to provide detailed information about their perception of their relationship.  It was built into the assessment process of the Centre for the Study of Psychotherapy at the University of Kent (which is now subsumed as part of the Kent Institute of Medicine and Health Studies).  Most students found it a difficult but ultimately rewarding experience.  It can easily be adapted for other purposes.

AAPPQ References.

I have not been closely involved in the Alcohol field for the last fifteen years and am not up to date with work using the AAPPQ these references come from my last two papers on the subject.  I know there are many more particularly recently.  If you know of any please email me and I will add them to the list.
